How to Book IRCTC train ticket online & Check PNR Status

Majority of the people in the country are dependent upon Indian Railways for traveling to other places. About 20 million people are known to make use of the Railway transportation. To help these passengers to avoid huge queues at the booking and enquiry counters, the railway has introduced the IRCTC website that allows people to book their tickets and also check pnr status from the comfort of their home or office.

Booking through IRCTC

IRCTC is actually the official Indian Railway site that offers plethora of choices for the passengers to choose from. As a matter of fact, booking through the site is easy, quick and satisfying. All the person needs to have is a computer or smartphone/tablet and a good internet connection, Net banking, credit card or debit card of any established bank. Also, he is to create an IRCTC account. Payment can also be made through Paytm Wallet or IRCTC e-wallet.

Knowing the steps to reserve railway tickets online through IRCTC

Step 1: Open the site

Step 2: Enter username / password. Click login button.

Step 3: Then, it is redirected to the next page “Plan My Travel”.

  • Enter in the ‘From’ and ‘To’ section, source and destination.
  • Choose travelling date
  • E-Ticket will be the ticket type
  • Choose Quota (General/Tatkal/Ladies)
  • Click ‘Find Train’ button to get list of trains

Step 4: Now, the desired train and Class (First AC / Second AC / Third AC / Chair Car / Sleeper Class / Second Sleeper) is to be selected. Upon selecting the desired option, available seats would be displayed.

Step 5:  Then ‘Book’ button is to be clicked that would redirect to the form ‘Ticket Reservation’. One can reserve up to 6 (for general) and 4 (for tatkal) people at a time.  Here, enter the passenger’s name, gender, age, berth preference. The box is to be checked for senior citizens. For children below 5, name is to be entered in the child’s section. Mobile number is to be filled up for receiving ticket through SMS. (Both this and print out ticket can be shown to the TC).

Step 6: Fill up Captcha, click Go button that redirects to payment section.

Once the above process is completed, PNR number gets issued present on ticket.

Checking pnr status

In case, the issued ticket is RAC or waiting list, the person has to check pnr status to know the updated status before making the departure. This is more important if travelling with family.  There are several sites that allow status checking which is to be done simply by entering the PNR number. A reputed site would instantly offer real time status update of the ticket.
